Apollo Slaying the Serpent: The Secret to Patterning the Fight, Flight, and Freeze Responses for Combat Sports

Let’s be honest…when it comes to Physical Fitness training today that links the Mind to the Body, there’s a lot left to be desired.

The majority of it comes from Psychologists and filters down to Fitness Trainers…and it’s all about getting out of the Fight or Flight response.

While it’s a great idea to get out of Flight Response, as no war was ever won by running away from the enemy, a key question remains:

What if you wanted to train the Mind and Body to get into the Fight Response?

A BED OF BUNK

Today, Psychology is denigrated by the majority of sane people everywhere. And rightly so.

One of the authors of DSM V, the American Psychology Association’s Official handbook, wrote an entire book on how he believes that Warrior Caste Masculinity is evil and must be eliminated from society.

And it’s not just a Man issue.

Even supporters of DSM V admit that its diagnostics and prescriptions are absolute bunk…for Men and Women alike!

However, Psychologists are not useless…far from it.

MODERN DAY MAGES

Under the banner of Postmodern Ideology, Psychologists are the Spiritual Caste of our Age.

They are the gatekeepers of all Mental and Spiritual Realms, and as such, they know many things consciously that average everyday people only know subconsciously.

And because of this, they can pervert the masses of humanity toward their Suburbanite, Bourgeois, Tellurgic Snake Cult ends.

They may be strange. They may be corrupt. But they are not ignorant.

And they are not useless!

The trick then, is to gain their knowledge and use it for our ends…

The Rising Spirit of the Heroic Warrior Caste!

WHAT THE HEALTHLINE GANG FORGOT

When it comes down to it, Psychologists have identified three responses to a threat:

  • Fight
  • Flight
  • Freeze

These things happen in your brain and are carried down into your body and back up the brain again via the nervous system in a never-ending loop.

This is what Psychologists call  the “Psycho-Somatic Connection”. Psycho means brain. Somatic means body!

Now the wonderful writers at Healthline.com claim that “Fight-flight-freeze isn’t a conscious decision. It’s an automatic reaction, so you can’t control it.”

In a sense they are right, but only about the conscious decision part.

What they forget to tell you is that we can train automatic reactions so that they are…automatic!

BIG 3 GONE ALL WRONG?

Just take a look at any Soldier, Cop, Fighter, or Professional Athlete…this is an example of the Fight Response trained and deployed in action!

And whether you like it or not, this is the goal of Men and Boys everywhere: the training of the Fight Response System.

But what if you are training your Fight Response System all wrong?

What if, in fact, you are training an entirely different Response System?

And what if, even worse, you don’t even know it

PARALYZED AND ROBBED

The reality is, today’s Postmodern Ideology and their Psychologist servants hate the Warrior Caste.

Warriors fight, and consequently, today’s Spiritual Caste Masters want to see the Fight Response denigrated and long forgotten.

They do this by promoting the Freeze Response

The Freeze response is just that…you are literally frozen in the face of danger, unable to move, paralyzed, and robbed of your ability to take action.

One source describes the Freeze Response Symptoms as:

  • “Hyper-Alertness
  • “Increased heart rate
  • “Tension in the body and muscles (tonic immobility)
  • “Energy seems built up, but cant be released
  • “Some, but minimal verbal cues – like ‘I feel stuck,’ ‘I can’t move,’ or ‘I’m paralyzed.’ Or, no speech at all.
  • “Shallow and rapid breath”

Yet another source describes these symptoms as:

  • “Feeling stuck in a certain part of the body,
  • “Feeling cold or numb,
  • “Physical stiffness or heaviness of limbs,
  • “Decreased heart-rate,
  • “Restricted breathing or holding of the breath,
  • “A sense of dread or foreboding.”

There are two ways to brainwash this Freeze Response in people today.

The first is in the Mind…Psychologically.

And the second is in the Body…Somatically.

HONOR CANCELED

How can the Freeze Response be ingrained in the Mind?

It can be done by working with two contradictory thoughts that cancel each other out.

In our case, Men love to fight. In fact, they are made to fight!

As the Biblical Scholar and Hebraic Linguistic Dr Skip Moen writes in his book Guardian Angel, God created the world according to the principle of Kavash…meaning Conflict, where we get the root word for Combat. This is reflected in the identical Indo-European principle of Agon

Likewise, when He created Adam, He bestowed upon him the roles of Avad and Shamar…meaning Worker and Warrior, likewise reflected in the Indo-European Caste System

And this all takes place before the Fall into Sin!

Now any Man with a Conscience will place rules upon himself and his conduct. We see this in the Indo-European Warrior Culture of Confrontational Combat…fighting clean, up front, mano-a-mano, straight shooting. No shooting fish in a barrel, because it is pathetic to shoot a fish who can’t shoot back.

In fact, the very concept of Honor comes from this combination of the Love of the Fight and the Love of Rules. Medal of Honor Winner and Classicist James Bond Stockdale explains in his book, Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot, that:

“Jacob Burckhardt, the nineteenth-century Swiss historian, thought well of ‘that enigmatic mixture of conscience and egoism,’ he called honor.

“Although from many standpoints egoism is an impurity, and conscience alone would be nobler, he nevertheless acknowledged the utility and power of the blend.

“Egoism gives conscience staying power.”[1]

As Stockale understood, these two thoughts…the Love of the Fight, and the Love of Rules…do not cancel each other out.

But in today’s Postmodern society, we are told that it is against the rules of good conduct to fight at all…we are told that it is not just against the rules to shoot fish in a barrel, but it’s against the rules to fight Confrontationally at all!

We want to fight, but we want to do it by the rules. But if the rules say we can’t fight?

Well, then, these two contradictory ideas cancel each other out…and pattern the Freeze Response into the Nervous System from the Mind.

But how can the Freeze Response be patterned into the Body?

WHAT THE MUSCLE MEMORY KNEW

Now you may Psychologically understand the con being played upon you by Postmodern Society and its Psychologist cohorts.

But you won’t be able to break out of it unless you address the Somatic…the Body.

You see, whatever action or response you pattern into your Nervous System, under stress you will do it without thinking.

Military and Law Enforcement Officers call this “Muscle Memory”…essentially, your Body will do whatever it is programmed through training to do…even if your Mind wants to do the opposite.

So even if you know that you are stuck in the Freeze Response, hate it, and want to get out of it…

Your Nervous System will remain stuck in it unless you train to get out of it Somatically…with the Body!

But what if the very way you are training your body is putting you in the Freeze Response?

AS COLD AS ICE

In my article, “ABCs or Hieroglyphics: Whose Teaching You Movement Literacy in Combat Sports?” I discussed the two different types of General Physical Training Models that exist today:

  • Dr. Stuart McGill’s Braced Spine Theory
  • Dr. Serge Gracovetsky’s Spinal Engine Theory

I discussed how Dr. McGill’s no movement, stiff, immovable Braced Spine Theory works for things like heavy flat-footed barbell Squats or Deadlifts, but it’s the kiss of death for human movement…

From basic walking and running all the way to fighting in particular!

And not only that,  Dr. McGill’s no movement, stiff, immovable Braced Spine Theory actually patterns the Freeze Response into the body!

Just give the work of McGill acolytes Pavel Tsatsouline and Dan John a look. Reference their books like the former’s Deadlift Dynamite and Simple and Sinister, and the latter’s Hardstyle Kettlebell Challenge

In these works, they outline the kind of High Tension techniques (“Hardstyle”) needed to make McGill’s system work. I’ve studied these works extensively over the last six years and have applied them prodigiously in my own training.

The techniques chiefly consist of:

  • “Tension in the body and muscles (tonic immobility)
  • “Physical stiffness or heaviness of limbs
  • “Restricted breathing or holding of the breath”

All patterning the Freeze Response in the Body!

And since 2007, these kinds of training methods have been the “Gold Standard” in the Fitness Industry for General Physical Preparation.

DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS

Top Spinal Engine Theory Trainer David Weck explains exactly how these techniques pattern the Freeze Response in the body:

“Freeze & Squeeze yourself Stiff to immobilize your spine in neutral…That which fires together wires together. [This] uproot[s] and riddle[s] the system (brain/body) with restriction.

“Tension shoots up your spine – deer in headlights neural engrams – is the dysfunction…Practice makes permanent.

“Don’t build strength on dysfunction.”

So then what should Strength be built on then, if we want to get out of the Freeze Response and start to Fight, Fight Fight?

THROWING YOUR WEIGHT AROUND

While Dr. Stuart McGill’s Braced Spine Theory patterns the Freeze Response, Dr. Serge Gracovetsky’s Spinal Engine Theory patterns the Fight Response.

David Weck calls the Spinal Engine Theory “Coiling Core” and “Head Over Foot.” That’s because  it literally consists of throwing your body weight from foot to foot…your head leading the bodyweight.

The head goes over one foot, putting all the bodyweight there. Then head shifts to the other foot, putting all the bodyweight there.

The Spine “Coils” contralaterally in the Sagittal, Frontal, and Transverse Planes to allow this to happen.

It is the act of throwing the weight from foot to foot is what patterns the Fight Response.

And this system has been practiced all throughout History!

WHAT THE HEROES KNEW

In the Indo-European-originated Qi Gong and T’ai Chi, the foot that the head is over is called the “Full Leg”, while the foot that the head is not over is called the “Empty Leg.”[2]

“If your weight is distributed evenly on both of your legs,” Zhang Fuxing writes in Handbook of T’Ai Chi Ch’uan Exercises, “both of them will become ‘full legs.’

“This state, to use a traditional expression, is called ‘double weighting,’ which is regarded as ‘taboo’ to T’ai Chi Ch’uan…Distinction between ‘emptiness’ and ‘fullness’ is directly affected by the shifting of weight.”[3]

As David Weck demonstrates, the “Full Leg” has the head over the foot, the same side hip flexor flexed, the same side shoulder down and back, and the same side palm of the hand facing upward.

Contrarily on the “Empty Leg”, the head is not over the foot, the hip flexor is extended, the shoulder is up and forward, and the same side palm of the hand facing downward.

We see this same style of training demonstrated with the Ancient Greeks in the Statues of Apollo…that Indo-European Solarian Hero who slays Tellurgic Serpents and loves the Sexy Forest Nymphs

In the statues, they call the stance “Contrapposto”,  with the “Full Leg” known as the “Engaged Leg” and the “Empty Leg” known as the “Free Leg”.

The stance was adopted by latter day Apollon Heroes like John Wayne and Charlton Heston alike.

And what’s more, we see this style of training preserved by the Indo-European Fighting Men of the 19th and 20th Centuries through the Swedish Ling System

Taught to British Tommies, American Yanks, and French Foreign Legionnaires alike.

When it comes to patterning the Fight Response in the Nervous System, Head Over Foot, Coiling Core is the key.

Just ask all the Heroes of History.

LIKE APOLLO SLAYING THE SERPENT

Take a minute alone, by yourself.

Look inside, take stock, and be honest with yourself.

Are you stuck in the Freeze Response, and desperately want to get out, but feel overwhelmed?

Don’t let the Psychologists and Fitness Trainers rob you.

There’s a simple way to get started patterning the Fight Response into the Nervous System.

You can do it standing, seated, or even laying down in your bed.

All you gotta do is move your hands. Pretend you are holding an invisible ball, and flip it over in a sideways figure eight pattern.

Just take a look at this video here, and let David Weck show you how.

You’ll be throwing your body weight around from side to side in no time.

And your Neurological System will be Fighting for you…not Freezing against you.

Then like Apollo, you can slay the Serpent, keeping the hordes of Chaos at bay, and winning the Victory for Good.

You’ll be following in the footsteps of your Heroes.

And who wouldn’t want to do something cool like that?

Pulp Fiction Power to you, my friends!

Sincerely,

Richard Barrett
