The Failure of Tactical Execution: Crossfit and Krav Maga Examined

The Strategic Idea of Crossfit is everything any thinking person would want to do in Fitness. The Strategic Idea is Holistic Fitness from every fitness discipline to perform in every aspect of Life.

But Institutionally, its Tactical Execution is fundamentally flawed, the exact opposite of what it needs to be there.

Therefore, the Strategic Idea becomes discredited in many people’s minds because of Tactical Execution failure.

Likewise, the Strategic Idea of Krav Maga is everything any thinking person would want to do in Fighting. The Strategic Idea is Holistic Fighting from every fighting discipline for Self-Defense.

But Institutionally, its Tactical Execution is fundamentally flawed, the exact opposite of what it needs to be there.

Therefore, the Strategic Idea becomes discredited in many people’s minds because of Tactical Execution failure.

We shall examine each in turn.

THE TROUBLE WITH CROSSFIT

Crossfit emphasizes Conditioning at the expense of Strength. While Conditioning…aka Strength Endurance…is important, it’s not the foundation. As Pavel Tsatsouline explains: “You have to have some Strength to Endure!”

Furthermore, Crossfit emphasizes Sagittal Plane Posterior Chain Hip Hinge at the expense of Sagittal Plane Anterior Chain Knee Bend. As I have explained before, this has been one of two contributors to an epidemic of knee injuries, of which trainers like Ben Patrick and his crew at ATG have had to step in and fix.

In addition to this, Crossfit places an emphasis on Transverse Plane External Hip Rotation at the expense of Transverse Plane Internal Hip Rotation.

As I have explained before, this has been the second of the two contributors to the aforementioned epidemic of knee injuries. This has led trainers like Jeffrey Wolf, Strange Grayson, and Lucas Aaron to step in and solve this mess by emphasizing Transverse Plane Internal Hip Rotation in their training programs.

Likewise, Crossfit places an emphasis on Plyometrics that proves disastrous. Now…that’s not to say that Plyometrics are disastrous in and of themselves.

But because Crossfit uses the three previously mentioned mistakes as their foundation for Plyometrics, Plyometrics become very dangerous because the body is not properly prepared for them.

All of these above elements are the individual elements that form Crossfit’s biggest problem: poor form bastardization of movements from a variety of disciplines…Olympic Lifting, Gymnastics, etc.

All of these things together create an institutional environment conducive to injuries and sub-par training.

These are Crossfit’s Tactical Execution failures.

This discredits their Strategic Idea of Holistic Fitness, and pushes people into a very false Dualistic mentality of “I’m either a Strongman or an Athlete” or “I’m either a Bodybuilder or a Powerlifter” and all the rest.

THE TROUBLE WITH KRAV MAGA

Krav Maga faces the same problems. Their Strategic Idea is Holistic Fighting from every fighting discipline for Self-Defense.

But like Crossfit, they bastardize movements from a variety of disciplines…Boxing, Wrestling, Kickboxing, BJJ. And of course, they bastardize them with poor form!

What’s more, instead of placing emphasis on multiple attackers, they generally place emphasis on one attacker!

This fact, coupled with a disturbing lack of sparring, consequently discredits their Strategic Idea in the public consciousness in favor of their main competitor, MMA.

MMA’s Strategic Idea is Holistic Fighting from every fighting discipline for Combat Sports inside the Cage.

However, in reality, the biggest institutional emphasis within MMA is on BJJ and Muay Thai.

Strangely, these two disciplines are institutionally pushed even though Wrestlers statistically dominate in MMA over every other discipline! This comes from their ability to successfully control another human being

And with the denigration of Boxing, footwork and head movement institutionally goes out the window!

Consequently, the most useful skills for Self-Defense from Wrestling and Boxing are likewise institutionally thrown out the window any which way you slice it…from Krav Maga to MMA!

In the end, this discredits the Strategic Idea of Holistic Fighting from every fighting discipline for any purpose.

This pushes people into a very false Dualistic mentality of “I’m either a Grappler or a Striker”  or “I’m either a Wrestler or Jiu Jitsu Player” or “I’m either Muay Thai or a Boxer” and all the rest.

REVALIDATING THE STRATEGIC IDEAS

Well, there you have it. The Tactical Failures that discredit the Strategic Ideas of Crossfit and Krav Maga alike. But it’s not the end of the story.

At Pulp Fiction Renaissance, my job is to fix the Tactical Execution of both of these by doing the opposite of what they do listed above…thereby revalidating the Strategic Idea.

And I’m not the only one on the job. Ben Patrick, Jeffrey Wolf, Strange Grayson, Lucas Aaron, Matt Furey, Tom Billinge, and Zach Even-Esh are revalidating the Strategic Idea in the realm of Fitness.

And James Lafond, Lloyd de Jongh, and W. Hock Hocheim are revalidating the Strategic Idea in the realm of Fighting!

Check out these great guys today…and join us, as together, we break the Fitness and Fighting mold!

Pulp Fiction Power to you, my friends!

Sincerely,

Richard Barrett
